"It’s time to care for the caregivers,” NDP brings proposal to establish Ontario Caregiver Support Benefit

Queen’s Park — In honour of Caregivers Awareness Month, MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is reintroducing his motion to establish the Ontario Caregiver Support Benefit—a direct monthly support payment for unpaid caregivers across the province.

“Over 3.3 million Ontarians are caregivers, and they need our help now more than ever,” said Gates. “Caregivers are doing everything from managing medications and appointments to offering emotional support. Most are working the equivalent of a part-time job with no pay. This motion is about dignity, respect, and real help for the people holding our care system together.”

For Gates, the issue is personal. “My wife Rita left her job early to care for her dad. That’s what families do. It’s time the government stepped up, too.”

Caregivers are struggling to make ends meet:

  • 300,000 face financial hardship
  • 33,000 have left their jobs
  • 77% have used personal savings
  • 75% are juggling caregiving and employment

“This isn’t just compassionate policy—it’s smart economics,” said Gates. “Every $1 invested can save up to $2.69 in long-term care costs. It could reduce the need for nearly 8% of Ontario’s long-term care beds and save up to $300 million annually.”

With over 40,000 people on long-term care waitlists, Gates argues that helping families keep loved ones at home eases pressure on hospitals, long-term care homes, and social services.

“This is a win for families, women—who are more likely to be caregivers—and our healthcare system,” said Gates. “It’s time to care for the caregivers.”

James Janeiro, Director of Policy and Government Relations at the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence, voiced his support:

“MPP Gates’ motion echoes the sentiment of millions of caregivers in Ontario who urgently need financial support. Caregivers in Ontario prop up our healthcare system, and it’s time for our government to support them in return. Direct financial support recognizes the economic value of unpaid caregiving and empowers caregivers to adjust work and care responsibilities to suit their individual needs.”

Gates will table the motion in the Legislature on Wednesday and is calling on all parties to support it.
